Melon Creamsicle Green Smoothie

melon1

Drive-Thru chocolate frosty’s with a long plastic spoon.

Orange creamsicle by the pool on a hot summers day.

–These are the daydreams that come to mind as I enjoy my frosty green smoothie on this lovely morning. Here I sit decked out in flannel from head to toe, wool slippers and a fleece house coat to boot. It may be -15 out yonder, but that doesn’t matter inside my delicious creamsicle smoothie bowl.

Creamy, with the classic flavours of vanilla and citrus, this just might be the perfect twist on your go-to breakfast smoothie. (more…)

Fudgy Cacao-Coconut Cookies

coo 035                     It is with wide open arms that I welcome back my chocolate addiction. After my guiltless Christmas blitz of lindor’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner I said tootleoo to chocolate for a little while. (Terrible decision, I know).

Although the separation brought on initial anxiety and withdrawal, I was able to push through a month or so without calling on my dark, rich and tasty friend for comfort. I had less cravings, slept easier and my tummy felt great. Life was good. But I missed my dear friend. (more…)

Apple Nachos + Raw Salted Caramel Sauce

“Expect Nothing, Experience Everything” – My motto for the beautiful month of February! Monday evening here, coming off a sugar high from the most rad birthday weekend a gal could ask for. This past Sunday I turned 24 and was elated to spend the weekend being pampered with gifts, love and attention by family and friends. (more…)

Cheeky Coconut Cherry Bombs

food gawk cherry025

Tart, cheeky, and surprisingly creamy; these cherry bombs are a tiny reminiscent of the cherry’s & cream Danish pastries from my childhood’s past.

I’m on a roll…with making balls these days. (sorry) But seriously I can’t stop experimenting and dreaming up recipes for raw and raw-ish treat balls. They are magic in helping me get over my cray cray sugar addiction! A lil date and a lil dried cherry goes a long way folks. (more…)

Raw Peanut butter Cookie Dough Bites

022013Naturally sweet and chewy, dabbled with chunks of choc chips and kissed with peanut butter… These taste just like the real deal.

I’m a second stomach kinda gal. I may have polished off 3 bowls of chilli for dinner but that does stop the pangs of ‘I WANT CHOCOLATE’ coming from my brain.

Key-word; Brain. The brain tricks us eating into sugar when we are sad, lonely and bored all the time. Admittedly I usually decide its easier to go with the flow and indulge instead of letting it taunt me all night. But post Christmas sugar blitz I have been trying to break the cycle with some faux-sweet treats:

  • I have found the perfect chocolate-mint tea that sometimes satisfies (when paired with 3 squares 90% dark chocolate)
  • Berry smoothies work
  • Bananas dipped in peanut butter (for the peanut butta lova’s)
  • Banana ‘icecream’ (but I may or may not have broke my food processor blending dates)

And then there is these…. cookie dough balls….um yeah. Packed to the brim with energizing and satisfying nuts, sweetened with dates, and flavoured with peanut butter. h e l l y e a h (more…)

Date, Banana & Walnut Oatmeal Bowl {vegan & sugar free}

005 017An Open Letter to Green Smoothies:

I urge you to not take this personally. I really do appreciate you and the energy you provide. However at this time you do not meet the criteria that makes me want to jump out of bed first thing in the morning when its -25 outside. Furthermore you do not make me feel good when you send an icy shiver down my spine. You do not make the chilly transition from fleecy pyjama set to clothes very easy. On that note you don’t even fill the deep dark cave I call my tummy. (but we wont get into that)

Sincerely;

Hungry & Cold

Happy Frosty Thursday everyone 🙂 This morning as I was begrudgingly digging myself out of my mile-high duvet, I had a craving for something sweet and filling. Like a cinnabon. or banana cake or poutine. I just couldn’t face another green smoothie morning with the wack temperatures that are happenin’ out there.

My healthy options weren’t looking too promising. I was too famished to squander minutes making waffles or pancakes or other baked wonders. Oatmeal didn’t tempt me much… I find it hard to enjoy oatmeal without brown sugar, anyone else? You can try and pretend to enjoy it with just fruit but it most likely reminds you of soft cement.

ENTER the Date, Walnut and Banana oatmeal bowl; The dates and banana transform it into something so  sweet and pleasing you will think you are eating dessert for breakfast. Equally filling and warming, you will wonder where its been all your life. Perfect for the coldest days of the year. (more…)

Mini Brown Sugar Plum Tarts

IMG_8745IMG_8768

OH the lowly plum! Overshadowed by its little sister the grape and its cousin the mighty apple.

The only time I have eaten plums in my life has been in the form of a german plum streusel cake baked by my Oma. And i’m fairly certain I picked out most of the plums. But hey, they are pretty delicious! Buttery and sweet, they pair perfectly with a crispy pastry and brown sugar sweetness.

Visiting with my Oma last week inspired me to create  a treat that would remind us all over her staple plum squares. As her mobility in the kitchen has declined, her craving for old favorites still comes back in waves. It was a pleasure to bring her a taste of her past cooking conquests that had inspired me so much growing up. (more…)

Chicpea Peanut Butter Cookie Bars

IMG_8636IMG_8634Rainy days off inside with an ADD puppy and a crazy craving for REES cups… Tensions are high. After splashing it out on a very wet and muddy jog, Georgie and I were exhausted, but the peanut hankering remained.

Drastic times call for drastic measures.. like using chicpeas in a peanut cookie bar recipe. Don’t be alarmed. When blended with peanut butter, those nutritious little peas create a smooth velvety cookie batter that will camoflage just right. These babies are the perfect way to treat yourself without going extreme on the sugar. Not only are chicpeas packed with fiber and protein, but they are proven to aid in blood sugar regulation!  Now thats a cookie i’d get to know… (more…)
